The 2023 Emmys have been delayed. According to Variety, the 75th Primetime Emmys will not air on its original date of September 18 on Fox. The delay will also impact the Creative Arts Emmys set for September 9 and September 10.
The postponement decision stems from the strikes by the actors and writers against the studios. With Hollywood shut down, the Emmys ran the risk of airing in a room without the writers and actors, who are not promoting their movies or shows due to SAG-AFTRA guidelines. The writers, who are not working or promoting like the actors, are not allowed to write material for the hosts and presenters on the Emmy telecast during the strike per WGA guidelines.
When Will the 2023 Emmys Air?
A new date has not been scheduled for the Emmys. However, the Emmys likely won’t take place until the strikes end. Variety reported that the Television Academy wants the ceremony to air in November, while Fox is pushing for January 2024.
The 2023 postponement marks the second time the ceremony has been pushed back during the 21st century. In 2001, the Emmys were moved to November as a result of the terrorist attacks on 9/11.
Despite the postponement, Phase 2 voting for the Emmys will still take place between August 17 and August 28, the Television Academy confirmed earlier this month. However, actors or writers will not be campaigning during that time if the strike persists.
