Prime Video’s Blade Runner 2099 will begin filming this spring.
Per Deadline, Blade Runner 2099 will go into production in April 2024. The series was originally going to be filmed in the summer of 2023 but was delayed because of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strikes.
Jonathan van Tulleken, who helmed the first two entries of FX’s upcoming Shōgun limited series, is directing and executive producing the first two episodes of Blade Runner 2099. He replaces Jeremy Podeswa, who departed the project due to scheduling conflicts.
What do we know about Blade Runner 2099?
Plot details for Blade Runner 2099 are being kept under wraps at this time; however, based on the series’ title, it appears the show will take place 50 years after the events of 2017’s Blade Runner 2049, which was directed by Denis Villeneuve. Blade Runner 2049, meanwhile, was set 30 years after Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, which was released in 1982.
Silka Luisa serves as a writer, executive producer, and showrunner for Blade Runner 2099. Scott is acting as an executive producer alongside Michael Green, Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson, Ben Roberts, David W. Zucker, Clayton Krueger, Cynthia Yorkin, Frank Giustra, Isa Dick Hackett, Tom Spezialy, and Richard Sharkey.
Amazon Studios officially picked up the series for Prime Video in September 2022. “The original Blade Runner, directed by Ridley Scott, is considered one of the greatest and most influential science-fiction movies of all time, and we’re excited to introduce Blade Runner 2099 to our global Prime Video customers,” Amazon’s Vernon Sanders said at the time, per Deadline. “We are honored to be able to present this continuation of the Blade Runner franchise, and are confident that by teaming up with Ridley, Alcon Entertainment, Scott Free Productions, and the remarkably talented Silka Luisa, Blade Runner 2099 will uphold the intellect, themes, and spirit of its film predecessors.”
A release date for Blade Runner 2099 has not yet been set.
