The Penguin, a new series that serves as a spin-off to 2022’s The Batman, has been given a new Max release date window.
Per Variety, The Penguin will premiere on the streaming service this September. An exact release date has not yet been set.
Casey Bloys, the chairman and CEO of HBO and Max content, said of The Penguin, “That is coming out of Matt Reeves’ The Batman and it’s fantastic. Just like Peacemaker came out of James Gunn’s Suicide Squad, it’s a really good example of what you can do.”
What do we know about Max’s The Penguin?
The Penguin is set one week after the events of The Batman and follows Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot, who is played by Colin Farrell, as he attempts to take hold of Gotham’s underworld.
Along with Farrell, the series stars Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone, Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni, Michael Zegen as Alberto Falcone, and Michael Kelly as Johnny Vitti.
Rhenzy Feliz, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O’Connell, James Madio, Scott Cohen, Theo Rossi, Carmen Ejogo, François Chau, David H. Holmes, Craig Walker, Jared Abrahamson, and Mark Strong will also appear in the series in undisclosed roles.
The limited drama series is written by showrunner Lauren LeFranc. Craig Zobel directs the first three episodes, while The Batman’s Dylan Clark and Matt Reeves, Farrell, LeFranc, Daniel Pipski, Adam Kassanand, and Bill Carraro serve as executive producers.
Filming for The Penguin began in March 2023; however, it was delayed because of the 2023 Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strikes. Production resumed in November 2023 before it then wrapped in February 2024.
The Penguin, which will consist of eight episodes, premieres on Max this coming September. The Batman, meanwhile, is currently streaming on Max and Hulu.
