Ex Machina and Tomb Raider actress Alicia Vikander will be starring alongside Cate Blanchett in Guy Maddin’s new project, Rumours, Deadline confirms.
Maddin wrote and directed the upcoming film with longtime film collaborators Galen and Evan Johnson. Bleecker Street has recently acquired Rumours for release in American theaters this year. The production of Rumours reportedly began on October 9, 2023.
According to Deadline, the rest of the Rumours cast includes Roy Dupuis, Charles Dance, Denis Ménochet, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Rolando Ravello, Takehiro Hira, and Zlatko Burić. Rumours hails from Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen’s Square Peg, with Elevation Pictures releasing the film in Canada.
What is Rumours about?
Set at the annual G7 summit, Rumours follows seven leaders of the richest liberal democracies in the world as they get lost in the woods, all while trying to piece together an interim statement on a global crisis.
Rumours came as exciting news, considering the individuals involved in the project. Maddin, known as an eccentric filmmaker with a knack for surreal storytelling, has released highly-lauded films like The Saddest Music in the World, My Winnipeg, Brand Upon the Brain, and The Green Fog.
Blanchett, on the other hand, is an established actress known for her appearances in Elizabeth, The Aviator, Blue Jasmine, Carol, Thor: Ragnarok, Nightmare Alley, and Tár.
Of course, Vikander is a great actress in her own right, best known for starring in Ex Machina and The Danish Girl. She most recently starred in Karim Aïnouz’s Firebrand, playing the Katherine Parr role. Her other film credits include The Glorias, The Green Knight, and Blue Bayou.
Other details about Rumours remain under wraps.
