It looks like a particular pair of Universal Monsters are alive once more as Maggie Gyllenhaal is reportedly set to helm a remake of The Bride of Frankenstein with The Dark Knight star Christian Bale playing a role.
There have been various reports of revivals for the classic Universal monster movies in recent times, not to mention we had Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man remake just a few years ago. This rumored remake of the 1935 sequel to James Whale’s Frankenstein was first reported by Production Weekly and then World of Reel.
Netflix is the company that supposedly will foot the bill for the remake, apparently titled The Bride. It would mark Gyllenhaal’s second directorial effort after 2021’s psychological drama The Lost Daughter.
The Bride: What Do We Know?
Very little is known about The Bride at this time, although World of Reel’s report mentions production may not begin until sometime in 2024. The movie will also star Peter Sarsgaard. Christian Bale’s role is currently unknown, so either actor could be playing scientist or monster. There’s also no clue if it will take the same modern approach Whannell’s The Invisible Man took or if it will opt for a more traditional period setting.
The original Bride of Frankenstein was a continuation of 1931’s Frankenstein and saw Boris Karloff reprise the role of the monster. Dr. Frankenstein is coerced into creating a mate for the monster by a former mentor and naturally proves he learned nothing from the events of the first film.
