The Bride!: Jake Gyllenhaal Has a Role in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Frankenstein Movie

Jake Gyllenhaal is playing an undisclosed role in The Bride!, his sister’s upcoming Bride of Frankenstein movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Nightcrawler actor has a role in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride!, which releases in United States theaters in 2025.

While it’s not clear how large of a role that Jake Gyllenhaal has in The Bride!, he said of collaborating with his sister on another project, “I am not going to be that person in an interview who gets emotional about it, but it is really emotional for me.”

Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal notably played siblings in 2001’s Donnie Darko, which was directed by Richard Kelly. They also both starred in two movies that were directed by their father (Stephen Gyllenhaal), 1993’s A Dangerous Woman and 1998’s Homegrown.

What do we know about Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride?

The Bride! was originally announced as a Netflix project in August 2023; however, the streaming service left the project not long after it was announced. Warner Bros. then took over in November 2023, while filming began in March 2024.

Written and directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, the movie stars Penélope Cruz, Christian Bale, Jessie Buckley, Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening, Julianne Hough, John Magaro, and Jeannie Berlin. The film is inspired by 1935’s Bride of Frankenstein, which, itself, is inspired by 1818’s Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley.

“The film sees a lonely Frankenstein travel to 1930s Chicago to seek the aide of a Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself,” reads the synopsis. “The two reinvigorate a murdered young woman, and the Bride is born. She is beyond what either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police, and a wild and radical social movement.”

The Bride! is currently scheduled to be released in United States theaters on October 3, 2025, from Warner Bros. Pictures.
