Turtle fans are accustomed to seeing Leo, Raph, Donnie, and Mikey in the brawler genre, something that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection makes quite clear. This upcoming bundle comprises 13 Konami games featuring the heroes in a half-shell, stretching from the arcades to home consoles and handhelds, most of which feature Rocksteady and Bebop as bosses. A new PlayStation Blog post and video from PlayStation Underground showcases this, as it features Shredder’s head cronies in their many fights against the Turtles.

The gameplay on display covers every piece of hardware represented in the collection, but not every game. While the pig and rhino combo appeared in arcades, at home, and on the Game Boy, some of the games in the Cowabunga Collection picked different rogues from TMNT history to fill out their bad guy roster. Players can experience that whole history within Digital Eclipse’s compilation alongside design documents and other behind-the-scenes features that may make it easy to guess what the original Konami developers were thinking.
Anyone who played through Shredder’s Revenge will recognize some of what’s happening in these gameplay moments across these many TMNT games. Not only are Rocksteady and Bebop frequent foes for the Turtles in both old and new iterations of the formula, but Shredder’s Revenge borrows elements like the Turtles following down manholes and the specific weapons the enemies use in some of their appearances. Looking at the older titles may help better contextualize the work Tribute Games and Dotemu did with the 2022 brawler, as it makes it more clear what they were inspired by.
