Investigation Discovery’s true-crime series American Monster will recount the gruesome crimes committed by now-convicted murderer Matthew Terry. The episode titled “Screaming Bloody Murder” airs this Sunday, November 19, 2023, at 9 p.m. ET.
The official synopsis states, “Michelle Rogers and Matt Terry are together and share a son, Matt, but he has a dark side that comes out when he drinks; his rage explodes, leaving Michelle fighting for her life; Matt serves prison time, but tragedy strikes again when he gets out.”
Matthew Terry reportedly stabbed his girlfriend Kay Baker on the night of May 27, 2022, out of jealousy and rage. Their neighbor found Baker’s body on the front lawn in the early hours of the following morning. He was found guilty in the murder case later that same year in November and is now serving a life sentence in prison.
Matthew Terry found guilty of murdering girlfriend Kay Baker
According to Law & Crime, Matthew Terry and his then-girlfriend Kay Baker were together in the Landing Bar & Grill on the night of May 27, 2022. There, he became upset when Baker danced with another man. Their neighbor reported hearing screams in the early hours of the following day and found the Baker’s body on the lawn in Lithia.
The outlet reported that authorities believed that the victim tried to escape through a window. However, Terry stabbed her in the neck with a kitchen knife. Her throat was cut and a knife – the murder weapon – was missing from the butcher block holder. Investigators, led by a bloody trail, found Terry in overgrown brush and trees. At the time, he was “only wearing a t-shirt and underwear soaked in apparent blood.”
Authorities also claimed that when they found Terry, he had lacerations on his fingers and hands and superficial cuts on his arm. He also had “two apparent stab wounds along each side of his neck.” They claimed he attacked his 43-year-old girlfriend in a fit of rage.
In November, a jury found Matthew Terry guilty of Kay Baker’s murder. The conviction was largely based on evidence that linked him to the crime as well as his ex-girlfriend Michelle Rogers’ testimony. Rogers reportedly testified that she had nearly survived a fatal attack by the defendant on St. Patrick’s Day 2017. Back then, the couple resided in Michigan.
Following the guilty verdict, a judge handed the convicted murderer a life sentence.
