In November 2022, a jury convicted Terry of first-degree murder in the slaying of his girlfriend Kay Baker case, per Law & Crime. Prosecutors alleged that he committed the crime after seeing Baker dancing with another man at a bar in May. The accused reportedly stabbed the 43-year-old in the throat in a fit of rage and jealousy. Following the guilty verdict, he received a life sentence.
Where is Matthew Terry now?
According to the Florida Department of Corrections, Matthew Terry is currently serving his sentence at the Hardee Correctional Institution. His November 2022 conviction in girlfriend Kay Baker’s stabbing death came with a life sentence.
Law & Crime reported that Terry fatally stabbed Baker in the throat on the night of May 27, 2022. The couple were together in the Landing Bar & Grill that night when he became upset when Baker danced with another man. In the early hours of the next day, a neighbor heard screams and found the victim’s body on the lawn in Lithia. Authorities believed that she tried to escape the attacker through a window.
The outlet also reported that officials claimed that Baker’s throat was cut. Moreover, they found that a kitchen knife was missing from a butcher block holder in the house. They then followed a bloody trail and spotted Terry in the overgrown brush and trees, “only wearing a t-shirt and underwear soaked in apparent blood.” He had lacerations on his fingers and hands, and superficial cuts to his arm.
Fox 13 reported that the defendant’s ex-girlfriend Michelle Rogers testified at his trial claiming that a similar incident had occurred in 2017. Rogers claimed that he had nearly killed her on St. Patrick’s Day back when they lived together in Michigan. She detailed the violent incident and how she survived her then-boyfriend. The incident had resulted in Terry’s conviction. He had also served a three-year prison sentence.
Another report mentioned that a month after his conviction, Terry requested a new trial in December 2022. The convicted murderer claimed that his attorney had lied to him. However, Tampa Judge Christopher Sabella gave a quick ruling by saying, “I’m going to deny the new motion for judgment of acquittal and a motion for a new trial.”
