Marvel’s The Avengers added another $5.7 million domestically on Friday to push its North American total to $538.1 million, surpassing The Dark Knight ($533.3 million) for the third spot on the all-time domestic box office list and trailing only James Cameron’s Titanic ($658.5 million) and Avatar ($760.5 million).
Worldwide, “The Avengers” also climbed to the third spot on the all-time list, surpassing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 ($1.328 billion). “The Avengers” has earned $1.331 billion globally and trails Titanic ($2.185 billion) and Avatar ($2.782 billion) on that list as well. “The Avengers” will remain in the third spot on the worldwide list because second place is now out of reach for the film.
Back in North America, Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman opened in first place on Friday with an estimated $20.3 million from 3,773 million. That’s bigger than Mirror Mirror‘s entire opening weekend and could lead to a better-than-expected $55 million for the weekend. The Rupert Sanders-directed film, staring Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth and Sam Claflin, received a B CinemaScore from moviegoers and cost about $170 million to make, not counting marketing expenses. The studio is predicting a $39 million international opening for the film this weekend.
Sony’s Men in Black 3 earned $8.3 million on Friday for second place and has earned $91.3 million after eight days.
Opening in only 86 theaters (as well as on VOD), Dimension Films’ Piranha 3DD earned just $63,000 total for a weak average of $733 per location.
Stay tuned for the full weekend box office report tomorrow.
