It’s Super Bowl weekend and Sony’s Screen Gems division continues their tradition of releasing low-budget genre fare over one of the biggest sports weekends of the year with the thriller The Roommate, starring Minka Kelly and Leighton Meester, bringing in an estimated $15.6 million opening weekend in 2,534 theaters, averaging over $6,000 per site. The James Cameron-produced cavern adventure Sanctum (Universal) took second place with $9.2 million in 2,787 theaters despite costing nearly twice as much as the Screen Gems thriller.
The Ashton Kutcher-Natalie Portman rom-com No Strings Attached (Paramount) dropped to third place with $8.4 million, down 37% from last weekend and bringing its total to nearly $52 million after three weeks.
The Oscar-nominated The King’s Speech (The Weinstein Company), starring Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush, continued to move up the ranks at the box office, taking fourth place with $8.3 million and a total gross of $84.2 million. It’s slowly catching up to its primary Oscar competition, David Fincher’s The Social Network, which has grossed $96.4 million in theaters.
Seth Rogen and Michel Gondry’s hit superhero flick The Green Hornet (Sony) took in another $6.1 million for fifth place with $87.2 million grossed after a month in theaters.
Both of last week’s new releases took massive hits with the Anthony Hopkins thriller The Rite (New Line/WB) dropping from first to sixth place with $5.6 million for the weekend, down 62% from its opening, and $23.7 million total. Jason Statham’s The Mechanic (CBS Films) dropped to seventh with $5.4 million and $20 million total after ten days.
The Coen Brothers’ True Grit (Paramount) crossed $150 million mark with another $4.7 million for eighth place.
The Vince Vaughn-Kevin James comedy The Dilemma (Universal) dropped to ninth place with $3.5 million and a lackluster $45.7 million after a month in theaters. It is the second most expensive movie in the Top 10 with a reported budget of $70 million.
Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan (Fox Searchlight) closed off the Top 10 with $3.4 million and $95.9 total, making it the third-highest grossing film for Fox Searchlight.
