Even with the release of two big movies with substantial star power, Disney•Pixar’s Toy Story 3 dominated the box office for a second week running with an estimated $59 million and $226.5 million total after ten days. The animated threequel directed by Lee Unkrich also brought in an additional $36.1 million in foreign markets where it’s grossed $100 million in the same time period.

Adam Sandler’s pairing with his long-time buddies Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade and Rob Schneider helped the summer comedy Grown Ups (Sony) explode into theaters with an impressive $41 million opening estimate in 3,534 theaters. It would be Sandler’s fourth-highest opening after Big Daddy, Anger Management and The Longest Yard, and an opening on par with Click, which opened on the same weekend four years ago. Its Kevin James’ fourth live action comedy to open over $30 million, this one averaging $11.6 thousand per site despite being trashed by critics.

Opening on Wednesday, the pairing of Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz in the James Mangold action-comedy Knight and Day (20th Century Fox) didn’t connect with audiences as quickly, making roughly $20.5 million in 3,098 theaters over the weekend for third place, building upon the $7.3 million it grossed on Wednesday and Thursday. It grossed another $12.6 million internationally in 12 markets including Russia, South Korea and Taiwan.

The Sony remake of The Karate Kid, starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan, took fourth place with roughly $15.4 million and a three-week total of $135.6 million, making it one of the summer’s more profitable movies based on its $40 million production budget.

On the other hand, Joe Carnahan’s The A-Team (20th Century Fox) has a ways to go to make back its $110 million budget and it won’t do that domestically going by its third week take of $6 million, down 58% from last week. It has grossed $62.8 million so far, roughly half of The Karate Kid.

Down to sixth place, the Jonah Hill-Russell Brand road comedy Get Him to the Greek (Universal) brought in $3 million, closing out its first month in theaters with $54.5 million.

Dropping to seventh place, DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek Forever After (DreamWorks/Paramount) added another $2.9 million to its box office take of $229 million, while the Jake Gyllenhaal action vehicle Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (Disney) ended up just below it with $2.8 million and $86.2 million total.

Warner Bros.’ comic book bomb Jonah Hex, starring Josh Brolin and Megan Fox, did a nosedive in its second weekend, dropping 70% to 10th place with $1.6 million and $9.1 million total, making it doubtful the movie might even make back half its $47 million production budget in theaters.

Despite the $120 million grossed by the top 3 movies, this weekend was down from the same weekend last year when Michael Bay’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (Paramount/DreamWorks) grossed $109 million over the weekend after grossing another $98 million on Wednesday and Thursday.
