DisneyPixar’s eleventh movie and their first threequel Toy Story 3, featuring the voices of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and more, helped get the summer back in gear with a estimated opening gross of $109 million in 4,028 theaters including Digital Disney 3D and IMAX 3D. 3D showings accounted for 60% of that opening with IMAX 3D bringing in $8.4 million, a new record for an animated film in the format, topping Monsters vs. Aliens‘ $5.1 million IMAX opening last year.
Besides being Pixar’s biggest opening, surpassing The Incredibles‘ $70.5 million, it was the third-biggest opening of the year after Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland and Iron Man 2, and Disney’s 4th $100 million opener to enter the Top 10 domestic opening weekends of all time. Toy Story 3 also brought in $44.8 million internationally, having opened in Mexico, Argentina and China, though it won’t open in other countries until July or August.
Harald Zwart’s remake of The Karate Kid (Sony), starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan, dropped 48% to second place with a solid $29 million second weekend, bringing its total to $106.2 million.
Last week’s other retro flick, Joe Carnahan’s The A-Team (20th Century Fox) dropped to third with $13.8 million, a respectable 46% drop-off presumably helped by Father’s Day today.
The Jonah Hill-Russell Brand road comedy Get Him to the Greek (Universal) held its ground by remaining in fourth place for a second week with $6.2 million and roughly $48 million total.
It also pulled ahead of the animated Shrek Forever After (DreamWorks/Paramount), which took its biggest plunge due to the Pixar competition, dropping a whopping 65% to fifth place with $5.5 million and a grand total of just under $223 million.
Jerry Bruckheimer’s action epic Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (Disney) starring Jake Gyllenhaal also remained in sixth place with $5.2 million and $80.5 million after four weeks, while the Ashton Kutcher-Katherine Heigl action-comedy Killers (Lionsgate) dropped two places to seventh with $5.1 million and $39.3 million total.
The fact that those last two movies did more business this weekend than the debut of Warner Bros.’ take on the DC Comics Western hero Jonah Hex, starring Josh Brolin, was fairly telling of what a big bomb the latest comic book movie was. It tanked with just under $5.1 million in over 2,800 theaters, a pitiful average of $1,800 per site.
The Top 10 was rounded out by Jon Favreau’s Iron Man 2 (Marvel/Paramount) and the family movie Marmaduke (20th Century Fox) with just under $2.7 million each. Iron Man 2 crossed the $300 million mark earlier this week while Marmaduke is still under $28 million.
Thanks to Toy Story 3, the Top 10 was up 32% from the same weekend last year when Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds’ The Proposal (Disney) topped the box office with $33.6 million and the Jack Black-Michael Cera comedy Year One (Sony) disappointed with $19.6 million.
Opening in four theaters in New York and L.A., the Duplass Brothers’ third film Cyrus (Fox Searchlight), starring John C. Reilly, Jonah Hill and Marisa Tomei, scored $180,000 over the weekend, an impressive per-theatre average of $45,000. The movie expands to other cities over the next month.
