Joel McHale says that his schedule is to blame for the delayed filming of the upcoming Community movie.
Speaking with GQ, McHale, who played Jeff Winger in NBC’s Community, provided a brief update about the upcoming film that has long been in development.
“Oh, well, it hasn’t been shot yet,” McHale said. “It will be. And I don’t have a definitive update because we thought for a moment it was going to all happen this year, and then it didn’t. But we have the money, and that is a huge step. And hopefully, people still want to see it. And Peacock’s paying for it. And so I can’t wait to do it. I’ll say vaguely next year. How about that?”
Regarding reports that Donald Glover’s schedule was the reason that the Community movie had been put on hold, McHale said, “No! If it’s anybody’s fault, it’s my schedule on this one. It’s not his at all. He was available. No, no, no, no.”
He added, “It was not Donald’s schedule. We love Donald. You can fully blame my schedule.”
What else do we know about the Community movie?
While there had been talk about making a Community movie for several years, Peacock officially ordered the film in September 2022. Series creator Dan Harmon wrote the screenplay with Andrew Guest.
Along with McHale and Glover, who plays Troy Barnes, the Community movie will bring back Danny Pudi as Abed Nadir, Alison Brie as Annie Edison, Gillian Jacobs as Britta Perry, Jim Rash as Craig Pelton, Ken Jeong as Ben Chang, and Yvette Nicole Brown as Shirley Bennett.
Plot details remain largely under wraps at this time; although, Glover previously revealed that it will be a “college reunion” and that Abed will be a “big director now.”
A release date for the Community movie has not yet been announced. All six seasons of Community are currently streaming on Peacock.
