28 Years Later: Jack O’Connell Joins Cast of Danny Boyle’s Zombie Sequel

Jack O’Connell has joined the cast of 28 Years Later.

Per Deadline, O’Connell has been tapped to join Jodie Comer (Free Guy, The Last Duel), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (The Fall Guy, Kraven the Hunter), and Ralph Fiennes (Harry Potter, The Grand Budapest Hotel) in 28 Years Later.

A sequel to 2002’s 28 Days Later and 2007’s 28 Weeks Later, 28 Years Later is being directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland. It is the first film that is part of a brand-new planned trilogy.

According to Deadline, O’Connell will play a supporting character in 28 Years Later who will have a larger role in the second film, which is being directed by Candyman’s Nia DaCosta.

What other movies has Jack O’Connell been in?

O’Connell made his professional Hollywood acting debut in 2006’s This Is England. He went on to star in movies such as 2014’s ’71, 2014’s 300: Rise of an Empire, 2014’s Unbroken, 2016’s Monkey Monster, 2019’s Jungleland, and 2023’s Ferrari, among other titles.

He’ll next be seen in the Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black, which releases in United States theaters on May 17, 2024. O’Connell was also recently cast alongside Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo in Ryan Coogler’s next movie, which does not yet have an official title.

Boyle, who directed 28 Days Later, and Garland, who recently directed 2024’s Civil War, are both producing 28 Years Later alongside Andrew Macdonald, Peter Rice, and Bernie Bellew. 

Cillian Murphy, who played a bicycle courier named Jim in 28 Days Later, serves as an executive producer. It’s unclear at this time whether or not Murphy will also reprise his role in 28 Years Later.

Plot details for 28 Years Later remain under wraps at this time. The movie does not yet have an official release date from Sony Pictures.
