Marvel’s Thunderbolts Confirms Mysterious Title Change, Kevin Feige Promises More Details Coming

Marvel has confirmed the title of the upcoming Thunderbolts movie will be Thunderbolts*.

In an Instagram video shared from the set of Thunderbolts by Yelena Belova star Florence Pugh last month, fans noticed there appeared to be an asterisk at the end of the title of the forthcoming MCU movie.

At Marvel Studios’ portion of Walt Disney Pictures’ CinemaCon panel on Thursday, April 11, 2024, via ComicBook.com, Kevin Feige confirmed the asterisk was part of the film’s official title.

“Yes, you’ll notice the asterisk on Thunderbolts*,” Feige said. “That is the official title of Thunderbolts* and we won’t talk more about that until after the movie comes out.”

What do we know about Thunderbolts*?

Thunderbolts* is directed by Jake Schreier, who previously made 2012’s Robot & Frank and 2015’s Paper Towns. The script comes from Eric Pearson, Lee Sung Jin, and Joanna Calo.

Along with Pugh, the film stars Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr/Ghost, Wyatt Russell as John Walker/U.S. Agent, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster, and Harrison Ford as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross.

Top Gun: Maverick star Lewis Pullman replaced Steven Yeun in the movie and is reportedly playing Sentry, while Geraldine Viswanathan has replaced Ayo Edebiri as a character who is believed to be Fontaine’s assistant. Both Yeun and Edebiri dropped out of the project because of scheduling conflicts.

Thunderbolts* reportedly “centers on villains and antiheroes going on a mission that was supposed to end with their deaths.” Further plot details are not available at this time.

With production being delayed in 2023 because of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strikes, Thunderbolts* releases in theaters on May 5, 2025.
