Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman Join The Roses Cast

According to Deadline, award-winning actors Benedict Cumberbatch (The Power of the Dog) and Olivia Colman (The Favourite) have signed on for the leading roles in Searchlight Pictures’ upcoming The Roses movie, based on the 1989 black comedy classic The War of the Roses.

The project is being described as a reimagining of the Danny DeVito-directed movie, which starred Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. It is still currently in the development stage.

“The Roses is a wildly funny, bigger than life, and yet deeply human story,” Searchlight President Matthew Greenfield said in a statement. “With Jay at the helm, and Benedict and Olivia and Tony, we have a dream team bringing it to life.”

What to expect in The Roses?

The Roses will be directed and produced by Bombshell filmmaker Jay Roach from a screenplay written by Poor Thing scribe Tony McNamara, based on a Warren Adler’s 1981 novel. In addition to starring, Cumberbatch and Coman are also producing alongside Leah Clarke, Adam Ackland, Ed Sinclair, Tom Carver and Michelle Graham. Executive producers are Jonathan R. Adler and Michael Adler.

“Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Theo (Cumberbatch) and Ivy (Colman): successful careers, great kids, an enviable sex life. But underneath the façade of the perfect family is a tinderbox of competition and resentments that’s ignited when Theo’s professional dreams come crashing down,” reads the logline.
