The Crow Original Director Criticizes Bill Skarsgård’s Look in Reboot

The director of 1993’s The Crow has some thoughts on the first look of Bill Skarsgård in the upcoming reboot of the film, and he doesn’t seem happy about it.

In a recent post on Facebook, Proyas shared a photo of the first batch of photos from the reboot, showing Skarsgård’s Eric Draven and FKA Twigs’ Shelly sitting at a fire. In the post, Proyas took shots at Draven’s look.

“Eric Draven’s having a bad hair day. Next reboot thanks,” Proyas said. In a few replies to fans, Proyas also remarked on the look of the character in the reboot.

Comments ranged from, “I guess he’s supposed to be a bad mofo with all those tats and werewolves and skulls on his jacket,” to, “Well at least the stills gave me a good laugh. I thought they were going to take a dump on Brandon Lee’s legacy for a moment.”

Reaction to Skarsgård’s look in the movie have been fairly divisive, with many fans criticising the decisions made while others remained optimistic about the upcoming project.

What is The Crow remake about?

The remake of the 1994 Brandon Lee movie and James O’Barr’s source material sees goth rocker Eric Draven (Skarsgård), along with his lover, Shelly (FKA Twigs), brutally murdered when the demons of Shelly’s past (Danny Huston) catch up with them. Caught in a limbo state between the living and the dead, Eric sets out to avenge their deaths, walking the line between the natural world and the supernatural one.

Alongside Skarsgård and FKA Twigs, the movie also stars Laura Birn (Foundation), Sami Bouajila (A Son), and Jordan Bolger (The Woman King).

Director Rupert Sanders (Ghost in the Shell) revealed what drew him to the project was, “This was the opportunity to make a dark romance, something that dealt with loss, grief, and the ethereal veil between life and death and reaching through that.”

The original film was released nearly 30 years ago, and was a modest box-office success. Unfortunately, its most lasting legacy is that it was the final film of Brandon Lee, as the actor was accidentally shot during filming.
