Audiences who loved the rom-com Anyone But You are about to see a different side of Sydney Sweeney in Immaculate. The psychological horror features Sweeney as a nun who discovers a sinister secret at her new convent. In a new issue of Total Film magazine, Immaculate director Michael Mohan explained the source of the horror in the film and praised Sweeney’s “unhinged” performance.
“In our film, the terror is about something very real and deep and personal and raw,” Mohan said. “The last two minutes of this film – it is the most unhinged performance Sydney has ever given. It fully establishes her in the pantheon of scream queens. Like, no doubt.”
What to expect in Immaculate?
“Sydney Sweeney stars as Cecilia, an American nun of devout faith, embarking on a new journey in a remote convent in the picturesque Italian countryside,” the official synopsis reads. “Cecilia’s warm welcome quickly devolves into a nightmare as it becomes clear her new home harbors a sinister secret and unspeakable horrors.”
Besides Sweeney, Immaculate’s ensemble includes Álvaro Morte, Benedetta Porcaroli, Dora Romano, Giorgio Colangeli, and Simona Tabasco.
Michael Mohan directs Immaculate from a screenplay by Andrew Lobe. Sweeney serves as a producer alongside David Bernad, Jonathan Davino, Teddy Schwarzman, and Michael Heimler. The trio of John Friedberg, Christopher Casanova, and Will Greenfield will executive produce.
Immaculate will have its world premiere at South by Southwest on March 12, 2024. It is scheduled to be released by Neon on March 22, 2024.
