Barbarella: Edgar Wright in Talks to Direct, Writers Set for Sydney Sweeney Movie

Sydney Sweeney‘s planned Barbarella movie may have found a director, with Deadline reporting that Edgar Wright is in talks to helm the film.

Alongside Wright, Deadline also reports that writers Jane Goldman (Kingsman: The Golden Circle) and Honey Ross have been tapped to co-write the project. As of now, not a whole lot is known about the project, but it does seem to be moving forward steadily.

Wright’s next project is set to be a reboot of the iconic 1987 film The Running Man, and with Sweeney also busy, Barbarella won’t be the next project for either star. Wright has reportedly been eyeing the Barbarella remake, which was originally announced several years ago, for some time.

What movies has Edgar Wright made?

Wright is also known for making 2004’s Shaun of the Dead, 2007’s Hot Fuzz, 2010’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, 2013’s The World’s End, 2017’s Baby Driver, and 2021’s Last Night in Soho, among other titles.

Sweeney, meanwhile, can recently be seen in 2024’s Immaculate, which will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on June 11, 2024. It was also recently announced that Sweeney will play former boxer Christy Martin in an upcoming biopic directed by David Michôd.

Plot details for the new Barbarella remain under wraps at this time. Sweeney recently told Happy Sad Confused’s Josh Horowitz why she wanted to star in the movie in: “I mean, Barbarella is just such a fun character to explore. She really just embraces her femininity and her sexuality, and I love that. She uses sex as a weapon and I think it’s such an interesting way into a sci-fi world. I’ve always wanted to do sci-fi. So we’ll see what happens.”
