Imaginary: Blumhouse Horror Movie Gets a Surprising Rating, Contains Violent Content

Blumhouse’s Imaginary will be rated PG-13.

According to the MPA’s Film Ratings website, Imaginary has been rated PG-13 for “some violent content, drug material and language.”

Some of Blumhouse’s most recent output has been rated PG-13, including 2024 Night Swim and 2023’s Five Nights at Freddy’s; however, the studio has a long history of making R-rated horror films, such as 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer, the Halloween franchise, and more.

What is Blumhouse and Lionsgate’s Imaginary about?

“When Jessica (DeWanda Wise) moves back into her childhood home with her family, her youngest stepdaughter Alice (Pyper Braun) develops an eerie attachment to a stuffed bear named Chauncey she finds in the basement,” reads the movie’s synopsis. “Alice starts playing games with Chauncey that begin playful and become increasingly sinister. As Alice’s behavior becomes more and more concerning, Jessica intervenes only to realize Chauncey is much more than the stuffed toy bear she believed him to be.”

Imaginary is directed by Jeff Wadlow, who previously made 2013’s Kick-Ass 2, 2020’s Fantasy Island, and 2022’s The Curse of Bridge Hollow. Wadlow co-wrote the script with Greg Erb and Jason Oremland, while he also produced the movie with Jason Blum.

The movie stars DeWanda Wise (Jurassic World Dominion, The Harder They Fall), Pyper Braun (Country Comfort, Desperation Road), Tom Payne (The Walking Dead, Prodigal Son), Betty Buckley (Carrie, Split), Taegen Burns (The Gateway), Matthew Sato (High School Musical: The Musical: The Series), Verónica Falcón (A Million Miles Away), and Dane DiLiegro (Prey).

Imaginary was originally scheduled to release in February 2024 but was delayed because of the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strile. It now hits United States theaters on Friday, March 8, 2024, from Lionsgate and Blumhouse Productions.
