Netflix has reportedly canceled its plans to release a nearly completed sci-fi thriller starring Halle Berry, The Mothership.
According to Jeff Sneider’s The InSneider, Netflix no longer plans to release The Mothership, a sci-fi movie directed by Matt Charman that was filmed in 2021. Along with Berry, the movie starred Omari Hardwick, Molly Parker, John Ortiz, and Paul Guilfoyle.
Why won’t The Mothership be released?
Sneider’s report says that The Mothership required “significant reshoots” that Netflix has opted not to move forward with. These reshoots would have been difficult to complete given that the movie stars several children who have noticeably aged since principal photography was completed.
The Mothership also reportedly had a “lengthy post-production process” and “repeated delays,” which factored into Netflix’s decision.
“A Netflix insider said that such decisions are never easy to make, nor are they taken lightly, and that the streamer was grateful to everyone who worked on the film,” the article reads.
This seemingly means that the streaming platform didn’t pull the plug on The Mothership for a tax write-off, which Warner Bros. Discovery’s David Zaslav has been known to do. Having previously scrapped Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt, Warner Bros. Discovery controversially made headlines last year for nabbing a sizable amount of money after canceling the release of the already completed Coyote vs. Acme.
“One year after her husband mysteriously vanishes from their rural farm, single mother Sara Morse and her children discover a strange, extraterrestrial object underneath their home, which leads them to embark on a race to find their husband, father, and most importantly – the truth,” the synopsis for The Mothership reads.
Charman, who previously co-wrote 2015’s Bridge of Spies with the Coen Brothers, wrote and directed The Mothership. Fred Berger and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones served as producers.
Berry is still working with Netflix on The Union, a new thriller directed by Julian Farino that co-stars Mark Wahlberg, J.K. Simmons, and Jackie Earle Haley. The Union does not yet have a release date.
