What to Expect in Problemista?
“Alejandro is an aspiring toy designer from El Salvador, struggling to bring his unusual ideas to life in New York City. As time on his work visa runs out, a job assisting an erratic art-world outcast becomes his only hope to stay in the country and realize his dream,” the official synopsis reads. “From writer/director Julio Torres comes a surreal adventure through the equally treacherous worlds of New York City and the U.S. Immigration system.”
Problemista stars Torres as Alejandro, Swinton as Elizabeth, RZA as Bobby, Isabella Rossellini as the narrator, Larry Owens as Craigslist, Catalina Saavedra as Dolores, and Greta Lee as Dalia.
Torres is a comedian best known for co-creating and co-writing Los Espookys, HBO’s Spanish-language comedy series about a group of friends who start a business creating horror illusions. Torres also spent time as a writer on Saturday Night Live.
Torres wrote and directed Problemista, which premiered at South by Southwest in 2023. Problemista was scheduled for an August 2023 release, but it was delayed due to the Hollywood strikes. Torres produces alongside Fruit Tree’s Emma Stone, Dave McCary, and Ali Herting.
