Due to the ongoing actors strike, Deadline brings word that A24 has officially delayed the theatrical release for its upcoming surreal comedy Problemista, which hails from writer-director and star Julio Torres. Originally scheduled for a limited release on August 4, the movie has now been moved to an indefinite date which will be determined much later.
This marks the latest movie release that has been affected by the ongoing strikes. Should the SAG-AFTRA fail to reach a fair conclusion with AMPTP soon, more upcoming high-profile theatrical releases are likely to also get delayed.
Who’s the Cast of Problemista?
Problemista is written and directed by Julio Torres, who’s best known for his work on the HBO comedy series Los Espookys. Joining Torres in the film are Tilda Swinton (The Souvenir) as Elizabeth, RZA (The Dead Don’t Die) as Bobby, Isabella Rossellini (Crime of the Century) as the narrator, Catalina Saavedra (The Maid) as Dolores, Greta Lee (Past Lives) as Dalia, James Scully (You) as Bingham, and more.
“In the film, Alejandro is an aspiring toy designer from El Salvador, struggling to bring his unusual ideas to life in New York City,” reads the synopsis. “As time on his work visa runs out, a job assisting an erratic art-world outcast becomes his only hope to stay in the country and realize his dream. From writer/director Julio Torres comes a surreal adventure through the equally treacherous worlds of New York City and the U.S. Immigration system.”
Problemista is produced by Torres, Ali Hertin, Dave McCary, Neha Simon, and Emma Stone. The film had its world premiere at the 2023 SXSW.
