Amazon Prime Video is set to buy the pre-international rights to a sequel to the hit action film The Ice Road, according to a recent report from Deadline.
The sequel, titled Ice Road 2: Road To The Sky, will see Liam Neeson return to star in the film. According to Deadline’s report, no official deal is done, but their sources mention that Amazon is extremely close to acquiring the rights to the film in the international market outside of Germany.
What will Ice Road 2 be about?
The sequel will see Neeson reprise his role as ice road driver Mike McCann, who is traveling to Nepal to honor his late brother’s last wishes of scattering his ashes on Mt. Everest. “While on a packed tour bus traversing the deadly 12,000 ft. terrain of the infamous Road to the Sky, McCann and his mountain guide encounter a group of Nepalese mercenaries and must fight not only to save themselves and the busload of innocent travelers, but also the local villagers’ homeland,” reads the synopsis for the film.
Alongside Neeson, writer-director Jonathan Hensleigh will also return to the film. The original film starred Neeson, Benjamin Walker, Amber Midthunder, Marcus Thomas, Laurence Fishburne, and many others, but it’s unclear if any will return for the sequel.
The Ice Road was released by Netflix in 2021, and earned mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike.
The original movie centered on the collapse of a diamond mine in Northern Canada. Following the collapse, “a ‘big rig’ ice road driver must lead an impossible rescue mission over a frozen ocean to save the trapped miners. Contending with thawing waters and a massive storm, they discover the real threat is one they never saw coming.”
