Walt Disney Pictures’ live action version of the classic fairy tale Cinderella, directed by Kenneth Branagh, is gearing up to start filming in the fall and the latest name to join the cast is Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgard, who will play the king’s adviser, the Grand Duke.
Skarsgard is probably best known at this point for playing Dr. Erik Selvig, first in Thor and then in last year’s Marvel’s The Avengers, and he’ll be reprising the role in the upcoming Thor: The Dark World. Before that, Skarsgard was known for his groundbreaking Scandinavian films, many of them with controversial Danish auteur Lars von Trier, who he is reuniting with for the two part Nymphomaniac.
Skarsgard joins Lily James in the title role, Richard Madden from “Game of Thrones” as her prince, Cate Blanchett as the wicked stepmother, Helena Bonham Carter as the fairy godmother and “Downton Abbey” star Sophie McShera and Holliday Grainger as the stepsisters.
The fantasy film is being produced by Simon Kinberg, Allison Shearmur and David Barron.
