Natalie Portman to Play Lady Macbeth to Michael Fassbender’s Lord

Just one day after news broke that Michael Fassbender would be headlining a new adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth comes word, via Screen Daily, that Natalie Portman will be playing Lady Macbeth to Fassbender’s Lord. Snowtown director Justin Kurzel is set to helm.

The new film will retain the play’s 11th century setting and is said to use the original dialogue as well. The story follows the devious Macbeth, a Scottish lord who will stop at nothing to become King.

Macbeth has made it to the big screen time and again. Geoffrey Wright directed a faithful adaptation in 2006 with Sam Worthington in the lead while, just a few years earlier, Billy Morissette restaged the action to a 1970’s fast food chain in Scotland, PA.

Fassbender and Portman were set to work together on Jane Got a Gun, but Fassbender departed the project prior to production. Portman can also soon be seen reprising her role as Jane Foster in Thor: The Dark World.

Jacob Koskoff and Todd Louiso will provide the screenplay for Macbeth with Iain Canning and Emile Sherman producing.
