Justin Kurzel‘s adaptation of William Shakespeare‘s Macbeth will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival tomorrow and in advance of its Croisette debut, Studio Canal has released two official clips from the film that finds Michael Fassbender in the title role alongside Marion Cotillard as Lady Macbeth.
Along with Fassbender and Cotillard the film co-stars Paddy Considine, David Thewlis, Sean Harris, Jack Reynor and Elizabeth Debicki and will be released stateside by the Weinstein Co. later this year, and its premiere at Cannes will suggest what kind of release it gets as that late festival screening is a little worrisome, though the talent in front of and behind the camera is very promising.
Neither of the clips give us much information in way of story, but they definitely suggest the style Kurzel and cinematographer Adam Arkapaw are going for. Arakapaw served as DP on Kurzel’s The Snowtown Murders previously as well as David Michod‘s Animal Kingdom and his work will be seen later this year in Derek Cianfrance‘s latest film, The Light Between Oceans, which, coincidentally, also stars Fassbender.
Watch the two clips below.
Macbeth is the story of a fearless warrior and inspiring leader brought low by ambition and desire. A thrilling interpretation of the dramatic realities of the times and a reimagining of what wartime must have been like for one of William Shakespeare’s most famous and compelling characters, a story of all-consuming passion and ambition, set in war torn Scottish landscape.
