The Matchmakers Episode 1 Recap & Spoilers: Rowoon’s Confession Shocks Cho Yi-Hyun

Rowoon’s new Korean drama, The Matchmakers episode 1, is finally out! The former SF9 singer stars as Shim Jung-Woo, while Cho Yi-Hyun plays Jung Soon-Deok. The highly-anticipated Korean drama aired its first episode on KBS.

According to the Joseon rules, nobleman Jung-Woo cannot pursue a government job and is forbidden from remarrying after his bride dies on the wedding day. Soon-Deok, on the other hand, leads a dual life. As Soon-Deok, she’s a young widow of the second son of the first vice-premier. Yet, as Mrs. Yeo Joo, she claims to be the best matchmaker in town. Eventually, the lead characters meet and decide to arrange marriages for men and women who have surpassed the typical age of marriage.

The Matchmakers episode 1 has many comedic elements. From Jung-Woo and Soon-Deok’s introductions to their first encounter, the episode is quite a treat for K-drama fans.

The Matchmakers episode 1 ending: Rowoon confesses his love to Cho Yi-Hyun

The Matchmakers episode 1 premiered on Monday, October 30, 2023, on KBS and Viki. The first episode began with Jung-Woo (Rowoon) explaining the history of matchmakers. He is a well-educated but resentful man who is forced to marry the Crown Princess. Unfortunately, she dies during the wedding ceremony and he is forced to live as a widower for eight years despite requesting for annulment of marriage.

The story then shifts to Yeo Joo (Cho Yi-Hyun) and Jung-Woo’s first meeting. It’s a typical K-drama moment where they make eye contact and fall into each others’ arms. However, in this case, it was her holding him. Their first meeting, though comical, quickly took an interesting turn. Since that day, Jung-Woo has been experiencing a sharp pain in his chest whenever he thinks about her.

When they meet next, he confesses his love for Yeo Joo, leaving her shocked. He comes to his senses and explains that he misspoke. The scene is the highlight of the episode and has the right amount of humor and punch lines.

However, the ending is quite strange. The king orders Jung-Woo to consume poison for ruining the Crown Prince’s marriage proposals. Will he oblige?

The Matchmakers episode 2 will air on Tuesday, October 31, 2023, at 9.45 p.m. KST on KBS.
