Mohanlal is gearing up for the upcoming movie Barroz. While the actor will play a unique role in the film, it also marks his debut directorial. Touted to be a fantasy movie, it is based on Jijo Punnoose’s novel Barroz: Guardian of D’Gama’s Treasure. It allegedly follows the story of Barroz, the guardian who has been protecting Vasco da Gama’s hidden treasure for 400 years. He has to award the treasure to the descendant of Gama. But, it is not easy to find a true heir.
Earlier this month, Mohanlal released a poster for the upcoming movie. The poster shows him wearing vintage clothes while interacting with a little girl. The backdrop confirms that the movie is a fantasy tale set in a different era. He also announced the film’s release date along with the brand-new poster.
Barroz will arrive in the theaters on Onam 2024, i.e., September 12, 2024.
L2: Empuraan
Mohanlal is all set to reprise his lead role in the upcoming movie L2: Empuraan. The movie marks the official sequel to the 2019 political action thriller Lucifer. The film franchise has three parts, and the second one is currently in production.
Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, the filming of L2: Empuraan, aka L2E, allegedly began in October 2023. The movie is being filmed extensively across several locations.
It was earlier reported that the makers will drop the first look of L2: Empuraan on Mohanlal’s birthday. The report turned out to be true as Prithviraj Sukumaran recently unveiled the first look of Lalettan from the movie. The poster had Mohanlal clad in an all-black ensemble. His stylish look confirmed that he will be back in action in the sequel. Sukumaran wrote, “Happy birthday Laletta!” in the caption.
The poster further revealed that the movie will be released in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi. Its release date has not been unveiled yet. However, as the previous film allegedly earned a whopping $24 million, the sequel is also expected to perform well at the box office.
L360
Last month, Mohanlal began filming for his upcoming film, tentatively titled L360. Helmed by Tharun Moorthy, the movie marks the 360th project of his career. The actor shared a few pictures from the film’s sets. The pictures also have actress Shobana, who is expected to play the leading lady.
Sharing the tweet, the actor wrote, “On the set, joining in prayers as we commence filming the project led by director Tharun Moorthy and produced by M. Renjith under Rejaputhra Visual Media. I express my deepest gratitude and seek your blessings as I embark on my 360th film venture.”
Reportedly, L360’s shoot schedule will go on for about two months. The movie is expected to be a family drama. However, its release date window has not been revealed yet.
Vrushabha
Mohanlal also has a movie titled Vrushabha with director Nanda Kishore. The Malayalam-Telugu movie went on the floors last month and boasts an ensemble cast. Besides Lalettan, the movie also stars Ramya Krishnan, Roshan Meka, Shanaya Kapoor, Ravi Shankar, Simran, Garuda Ram, and Sarathkumar.
While the movie is being made on a generous budget, it was not easy for Nanda Kishore to pull off such a project. The director’s popular movie Pogaru was hit with a massive controversy in 2021, and his last project did not do well. Talking to The Hindu, the director revealed, “People had written me off post my films’ failures. I shut out the noise, stopped being seen in public events, and moved to Mumbai. I worked on a story for eight months. One of my friends, Shyam, helped me get in touch with AVS Studios, and the film got rolling.”
The director added, “Mohanlal is someone who acts with his eyes. He was interested immediately reading the script. I want to remain sincere to his enormous talent.”
Kannappa
Mohanlal is also a part of the upcoming mythological film Kannappa. The movie is an ambitious project by Vishnu Manchu with a star-studded cast. Besides Mohanlal, the movie also has Prabhas, Akshay Kumar, and more playing crucial roles. Details about the Malayalam star’s role are under wraps.
