Bollywood director Karan Johar publicly criticized comedian Kettan Singh for mimicking him on national television. The director described his portrayal of him as “exceptionally poor taste.” The clip was shown during a promo of the comedy show Madness Machayenge, which aired on Sony TV. The incident has sparked a debate over the boundaries of comedy and respect within the entertainment industry.
Johar, who recently directed the hit film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, shared his feelings through a statement on Instagram. He stated, “I was sitting and watching television with my mom…and saw a promo of a reality comedy show on a supposedly respectable channel… a comic was mimicking me in exceptionally poor taste…I expect this from trolls and faceless and nameless people, but when your own industry can disrespect someone who has been in the business for over 25 years, it speaks volumes about the times we live in…this doesn’t even anger me. It just makes me sad!”
Kettan Singh apologises to Karan Johar for mimicking him
The comedian in question, Kettan Singh, responded to the criticism by apologizing. Speaking to Times Now, Singh expressed regret over the act. He also emphasized his admiration for Johar’s work in the film industry: “I would like to apologize to Karan (Johar) sir. First of all, whatever impersonation I do, it is because I watch a lot of Karan Johar on his talk show. I am a fan of his work, and have seen his latest film, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani 5 to 6 times. I am a huge fan of his work and his show. If my actions hurt him, I would like to apologize to him. My intention was not to hurt him. I just wanted to entertain audience but if I did something extra, I would like to say sorry to him.”
Ektaa Kapoor, a close friend of Johar, took to Instagram to support Johar and share her thoughts on such mimics: “Happened so many times! Ugly humor sometimes on shows. And even at award functions. And then they expect you to attend! Karan please ask them to imitate one movie or classic of yours,” she wrote. Johar responded appreciatively with, “Love you Ektu.”
The controversy has highlighted the ongoing issues of respect and dignity in portraying public figures in media and entertainment. Meanwhile, Johar is gearing up for his upcoming projects, including producing Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari starring Janhvi Kapoor and Varun Dhawan, and an untitled project with Kartik Aaryan. Meanwhile, the industry and fans await further developments and reactions stemming from this incident.
