The Story: Left for dead on a sun-scorched planet, Riddick finds himself up against an alien race of predators. Activating an emergency beacon alerts two ships: one carrying a new breed of mercenary, the other captained by a man from Riddick’s past.

Thoughts: I’ve never been a die-hard Riddick fan, but I am interested in checking this one out, nonetheless. I was happy to see that David Twohy was staying on as the director and I was also pleased to see that Karl Urban will be in the film.

I, Frankenstein

Release Date: September 13th

The Story: Frankenstein’s creature finds himself caught in an all-out, centuries old war between two immortal clans.

Thoughts: Not a lot of information available on this one, at the moment. But, Stuart Beattie is known for creating blockbusters and he is working with a highly capable cast, so it may just be worth checking out.

Release Date: October 18th

The Story: The quiet suburb of Chamberlain, Maine is home to the deeply religious and conservative Margaret White and her daughter Carrie. Carrie is a sweet but meek outcast whom Margaret has sheltered from society. Gym teacher Miss Desjardin tries in vain to protect Carrie from local mean girls led by the popular and haughty Chris Hargenson, but only Chris’ best friend, Sue Snell, regrets their actions. In an effort to make amends, Sue asks her boyfriend, high school heartthrob Tommy Ross, to take Carrie to prom. Pushed to the limit by her peers at the dance, Carrie unleashes telekinetic havoc.

Thoughts: I was very pleased to see that Kimberly Peirce had been tapped to direct. I think she will bring a unique perspective to Carrie’s story that we have not yet seen. I was happy to see that the film has been well cast. Chloe Moretz and Julianne Moore were great choices.

Paranormal Activity 5

Release Date: October 25th

The Story: The fifth chapter in the ultra successful found footage franchise.

Thoughts: I know absolutely nothing about this film. But, I’m not expecting a lot from this fifth entry. The series has had its ups and downs. But, I’m afraid that a fifth film is just milking the franchise for all it’s worth. However, I will reserve final judgment for down the road, when I’ve had a chance to learn a little bit more about the project.

And the rest…

The Story: Passengers aboard a flight across the Pacific Ocean encounter a supernatural force.

Thoughts: It looks like a lot of what we’ve seen before, just done in the air. After checking out the preview, this strikes me as one of those films where you see nearly all of the worthwhile content in the trailer.

First Six Minutes: Click here

The Story: A remake of William Lustig’s ’80s horror film, From producers Alex Aja and Gregory Lavasseur.

Thoughts: I was really surprised when I heard that Elijah Wood had been tapped to play the Frank Zito character in the Maniac reboot. But after seeing some clips from the film, which actually made me uncomfortable, I am anxiously anticipating its US release.

The Story: The second feature film from the Sisters Soska, starring Katharine Isabelle, follows the story of medical student Mary Mason as she grows increasingly broke and disenchanted with medical school and the surgeons she once admired. The allure of easy money and notoriety send Mary into the shady world of underground surgery and body modification.

Thoughts: I loved this movie. I caught it at a festival screening and was very, very pleased. It shows incredible growth over Dead Hooker in a Trunk, but it’s apparent that the Soska Sisters sophomore feature film was every bit as much a labor of love as Hooker
