The Story: Norwegian folklore turns out to be real when Leo and Elvis encounter Thale in a basement. A regular cleaning job turns into a struggle for survival, while theyā€™re trying to figure out what or who Thale is.

Thoughts: The trailer is bizarre. It intrigued me. Writer/Director Aleksander Nordaas doesnĀ’t have a lot of experience, but a lot of my favorite horror films of years past have come from up and coming foreign directors before they had succumbed to the studio system in the States (Cold Prey and Dead Snow, for example).

The Story: Continuing where the first film left off, teenage Nell Sweetzer is found dirty and terrified in the woods having just escaped a demon ritual in which a cult helped her give birth to a demon baby. Confused and scared, Nell is examined by doctors but she doesnĀ’t remember much about the previous few months except that as a result of everything, her family is now dead. She is moved into Davreaux Ā– a girlsĀ’ halfway house in New Orleans, where she will try to put her life back together with the help of the therapist, Frank Merle. She even begins to date a boy named Chris and starts a job at a local hotel. But something doesnĀ’t feel right to Nell. She is being sought after by the demon that possessed her in the first Last Exorcism. It wants Nell, but in a different way than beforeĀ…

Thoughts: I liked the first one. A sequel seems foolhardy, though. The trailer looks bad. The idea of having a sequel to a film that was called The Last Exorcism just seems silly. Ā

The Story: After Indiaā€™s father dies in an auto accident, her Uncle Charlie, who she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her emotionally unstable mother. Soon after his arrival, she comes to suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives, but instead of feeling outrage or horror, this friendless girl becomes increasingly infatuated with him.

Thoughts: IĀ’ve never been a Nicole Kidman fan, and I wasnĀ’t bowled over by the trailer, but IĀ’m trying to give it the benefit of the doubt.

The Story: Ā In order to save a young girlā€™s life, an emergency operator must confront a killer from her past.

Thoughts: ItĀ’s from Brad Anderson, the director of Session 9. That itself is enough, for me. My only reservation is that WWE Studios is producing, and I have never seen a film that they were involved with that impressed me, on any level. However, the trailer is gripping, and the film has a talented cast, so I am excited.Ā

The Story: Five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin. When they discover a Book of the Dead, they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.

Thoughts: I canĀ’t say enough good things about what IĀ’ve seen of this film or its director Fede Alvarez. I got to spend a few days on set, in June, and I was blown away by AlvarezĀ’ commitment to the film, and his desire to honor the original, but make his own movie.

The Story: A mysterious wooden box containing a vinyl record arrives at a local rock radio station, a gift of the Lords. She assumes itā€™s a rock band on a mission to spread their word. As she plays the Lordā€™s record, it starts to play backwards, and she experiences a flashback to a past trauma.

Thoughts: IĀ’ve been excited about this one for longer than I can remember. Everyone that weĀ’ve tried to talk to about the film has been so tight lipped that it has only increased my curiosity. I think that Zombie shines when heĀ’s working with original material. IĀ’m very anxious to see this one.

The Story: Three childhood friends set aside their personal issues and reunite for a girlsā€™ weekend on a remote island off the coast of Maine. One wrong move turns their weekend getaway into a deadly fight for survival.

Thoughts: IĀ’m looking forward to this one. The preview reminded me a little bit of MotherĀ’s Day (1980). IĀ’m very curious to see how the finished product turns out.
