SDCC Video Interview with Guillermo del Toro

On Dark, Haunted Mansion, Mountains of Madness & more

It’s been four years since Guillermo del Toro was at San Diego Comic-Con with Pan’s Labyrinth, and a little over two years since he went off to New Zealand to direct The Hobbit, a project which faced problems that forced del Toro to quit the project a few months ago.

In the interim, del Toro has been actively involved with producing some of the best horror movies of the last five years including the Spanish language ghost movie The Orphanage and the recent Splice.

Early next year, a project close to del Toro’s heart that he’s been developing forever, a remake of the 1973 thriller Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, will finally see the light of day (so to speak) with first-time feature director (and comic book artist) Troy Nixey at the helm. From the footage we saw at Comic-Con, it looks to be up there with some of del Toro’s best works. (You can read our description here.)

ShockTillYouDrop.com had a chance to sit down at Comic-Con with Señor del Toro for a (mostly) exclusive video interview, talking not only about the long-in-development remake, but also his planned collaboration with Disney on The Haunted Mansion, which he hasn’t completely ruled out directing, as well as his hopes that his movie based on H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness will happen sooner rather than later. He also talked a little bit about the planned remake of The Orphanage and what’s going on with that.

You can watch the interview below, which we conducted with Ned Ehrbar from Metro newspaper. (Thanks, Ned!)

Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark opens on January 21, 2011. Look for our interview with director Troy Nixey very soon.
