What Happened to Ryan Johansen? Contract & Injury Update

NHL veteran Ryan Johansen is currently facing contractual issues with the Philadelphia Flyers, majorly due to his reported injury. The ice hockey center was an integral part of the Nashville Predators’ squad before getting traded in 2023. However, his transfer has since resulted in several agreement troubles, leading to a huge controversy with the player. But what actually happened with the 32-year-old athlete?

Here are all the available details regarding Ryan Johansen’s supposed injury, as well as his material breach of contract with the Philadelphia Flyers.

Did Ryan Johansen get injured?

According to Johansen’s agent, the player is currently recovering from a severe hockey injury.

Following the Flyers’ decision to place Ryan Johansen on unconditional waivers, his agent, Kurt Overhardt, released a public statement highlighting his injury, as per Yahoo Sports. Overhardt stated that his client has an acute hockey-related ailment and is scheduled to undergo extensive surgery.

The Canadian international was traded to Philadelphia on March 6, 2024, before getting placed on waivers. Having cleared the waivers, he was subsequently assigned to Philadelphia’s AHL affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. However, a reported hip injury ultimately restricted Ryan Johansen from completing the move. Flyers general manager Danny Briere even asserted that his side did not expect Johansen to return during a news conference in April.

Is the Philadelphia Flyers terminating Ryan Johansen’s contract?

Despite the claims of Johansen’s agent, the Flyers have put the sportsman on unconditional waivers with the intention of terminating his contract.

As explained by the NHL giants, the step was taken due to a material breach of contract by the player. Having joined the team in March, Ryan Johansen has yet to play a game for the Flyers due to his apparent injury. His agent has since condemned Philadelphia’s decision and has publically expressed his disappointment. The player’s representatives have also raised a concern with the NHLPA, who are currently reviewing the scuffle.

At the time of writing, Johansen is firmly stationed on unconditional waivers.
