Laslo Djere is a Serbian professional tennis player. He currently stands at no. 109 on the ATP world rankings and reached a career-high of no. 27 in 2021. He most recently participated in the US Open and won his first-round game against Jan-Lennard Struff. However, while facing tennis legend Novak Djokovic in his second singles match, he saw an unfortunate exit due to an injury.
Let’s take a look at Laslo Djere’s early retirement from his US Open game against Novak Djokovic.
Why did Laslo Djere retire from the 2024 US Open?
Laslo Djere retired from the second-round US Open men’s singles match against Novak Djokovic due to an injury.
In the second round of the Men’s singles at the US Open, Djere played against Djokovic once again. He gave Djokovic a tough fight, trailing 6-4, 6-4 in the first two sets, but unfortunately, he decided to retire just seven minutes into the third set. The Serb’s retirement resulted in Djokovic winning by walkover, with the final score as 6-4, 6-4, 2-0.
Earlier in April this year, Djere underwent elbow surgery and, hence, seemed to face mobility issues during the game. Even during the game, a physio attended to him during a medical timeout as he lay on the tennis court. Additionally, the scorching heat and humidity at the venue have reportedly been testing competitors at Flushing Meadows.
As per ATP, after the game against Djere at the US Open, Djokovic said, “It’s not what we want. It’s not what the crowd wants to see a walkover. But he obviously had an injury that took him out of the Tour for some time, and he is struggling to come back physically to this level. He’s such a good player, especially in these conditions. It should’ve been his second set, honestly.”
