Best & New Malayalam Movies in 2024

2024 has been an incredible year for Malayalam cinema, bringing various blockbuster stories and unforgettable performances to the big screen. From heartwarming tales of friendship like Manjummel Boys to intense suspense dramas like Aattam, this year’s releases have enthralled audiences and critics alike. Here’s a look at some of the best and new Malayalam movies of 2024 that shouldn’t be missed.

Manjummel Boys

One of the highest-grossing movies of the year, Manjummel Boys, showcases the bond between a group of friends from Manjummel, a small locality in Ernakulam, Kerala. The film, featuring an ensemble cast including Soubin Shahir, Sreenath Bhasi, Balu Varghese, Ganapathy, and Jean-Paul Lal, is based on a true story. This Malayalam movie revolves around a group of young men who find themselves in a life-or-death situation during a holiday in the Gunaa Caves of Kodaikanal.

When one of their friends, Subhash (Sreenath Bhasi), falls into a deep pit, the group first forms a human fortress to prevent rainwater from flooding the pit. Later, when the rescuers refuse to go down to the devil’s kitchen, one of his friends, Kuttan (Soubin Shahir), decides to do it himself. What follows is a series of emotional, nail-biting, intense sequences, ultimately leading him to be rescued with the help of his friends.

Aavesham

Jithu Madhavan’s Aavesham is a gangster comedy that marks Fahadh Faasil’s first full-fledged masala film. Set in Bengaluru, the story revolves around three college students who, in their quest for revenge against bullying seniors, find a gangster named Rangan. The protagonists, Bibi, Aju, and Shanthan, initially planned to unite first-year students against their tormentors. However, their plan backfires, leading them to Rangan.

The film balances humor with thrilling action, presenting a unique take on college life and the underground world of crime. As they get entangled with Rangan, the students’ journey takes unexpected twists. Overall, Aavesham is a must-watch for its unique storyline and iconic one-liners.

Premalu

Premalu, featuring Naslen and Mamitha Baiju, is a romantic drama that is one of the highest-grossing Indian films of 2024. Despite its seemingly cliché plot of unrequited love turning mutual, the film’s execution and performances have won over audiences.

Naslen plays Sachin, a B.Tech graduate with unclear goals, whose life takes a turn when he meets Reenu (Mamitha Baiju), an IT professional. After his visa application to the UK was rejected, Sachin enrolled in GATE coaching in Hyderabad. However, he eventually starts working at a fried chicken shop.

The film follows Sachin’s attempts to win Reenu’s heart, navigating the complexities of their differing backgrounds and aspirations. All in all, this Malayalam movie stands out for its heartfelt portrayal of love and the growth of its characters. It is available for streaming on Disney+ Hotstar,

Bramayugam

Bramayugam transports viewers to 17th-century Malabar, where Thevan, played by Arjun Ashokan, escapes slavery with his friend Koran. Their journey takes a dark turn when Koran gets killed by a yaksha. Thevan seeks refuge in an abandoned mansion, encountering mysterious characters and dark secrets.

Shot entirely in black and white, Bramayugam is more than just a horror thriller. It delves into the sinister history of the mansion and the eerie presence of Kodumon Potti, played by Mammootty. The film’s atmospheric tension and gripping storyline make it a standout in Malayalam cinema.

Aattam

Directed by Anand Ekarshi, Aattam is a suspenseful drama that examines gender dynamics, patriarchy, and morality. The film, screened at the 28th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), centers around a woman who faces sexual assault in a seemingly safe space.

Aattam critiques patriarchal insensitivity and male hypocrisy, highlighting the societal challenges women face. Moreover, the film’s layered narrative and thought-provoking performances make it a poignant and relevant piece of Malayalam cinema.
