What happened at the end of Netflix’s The Kitchen?
At the end of the movie, Izi returns to the Kitchen and reunites with Benji.
The third act of The Kitchen saw Izi fight with the dilemma of whether he should apply for a dual occupancy flat at Beuna Vida and live with Benji or move into the one-room flat that he acquired after a long waiting period. He chose to abandon Benji and leave him at The Kitchen while he moved into his shiny new single-occupancy flat.
Another abandonment from Izi pushed Benji to hang out with Staples and his crew. But being involved in their heists and destruction of fancier flats terrified him. So, he went back home. Meanwhile, Izi attended the funeral of the radio jockey, Lord Kitchener, who was beaten down and killed by the police in their brutal raid at The Kitchen.
Being welcomed by The Kitchen-folk whom he never cared for made Izi realize that his new flat may be fancy, but he can’t call it a home without sharing it with family. So, he decided to go back to Benji and apologize. As a gesture, he also brought the plant with Benji’s mother’s remains back to give him closure. They plant her somewhere safe and Izi decides to stay with Benji at the Kitchen.
In the final scene, Benji and Izi discuss their familial connection right before their door gets knocked down, bringing the film to an end.
Is Izi Benji’s father in The Kitchen?
Though there is no confirmation through a DNA test, The Kitchen provides quite a few hints to state the fact that Izi was Benji’s father.
Both Izi and Benji felt a connection and had an unspoken bond with each other. It’s what made Izi show kindness towards Benji and come back to him time after time after abandoning him. They never take a DNA test. But both of them seemingly knew that they were related to each other.
Ultimately, the question becomes pointless as when Benji asks about it, Izi asks him whether he’d like him to be his dad. Benji replies, “Let’s see how it goes.” Izi agrees, which shows that he accepts Benji as his son and is ready to prove that by taking care of him.
Who knocked on the door?
The door could have been knocked down by the Police, who came to take over the Kitchen with even more preparation at the end.
One possibility is that the door could have been knocked down by people from the Kitchen. Since Izi never cared about them and chose to live with the elites, they could have come in for revenge. But a better explanation would be that the door was knocked down by the police.
They came in with stronger forces to take over the area that they believed was illegally occupied. But this time, the people of The Kitchen were united as one. They all saw “we” as “I”, just as Lord Kitchener wanted them to. His demise motivated all of them to make a stand, including Izi. He was right there by Benji’s side, ready to fight the police to protect him.
