World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) has released an official documentary detailing the company’s efforts to make Wrestlemania 40 one of the biggest events in sports history. The documentary Wrestlemania 40 Behind the Curtain explores how people’s reactions forced the management to change the main event of Wrestlemania XL, which involved Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes. The documentary is available for viewers to stream on WWE.com and WWE’s official YouTube channel.
WWE’s chief content officer Paul Levesque, aka Triple H, revealed in the documentary that they confirmed 80% of the card for Wrestlemania 40 in October 2023. Initially, they had plans for Roman Reigns to face Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in the main event.
However, the decision did not sit well with the fans. The WWE Universe took to social media and started the hashtag #WeWantCody. The hashtag became number one for 72 hours in the US and changed the trajectory of the event. Additionally, the documentary opens up about how Triple H and The Rock altered their plans and collaborated to deliver what fans wanted.
Eventually, Cody Rhodes did fight Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship. However, the documentary does reveal why Triple H did not take The Rock entirely out of the “Finish the Story” narrative.

Wrestlemania 40 Behind the Curtain features several in-depth interviews and behind-the-scenes footage. WWE superstars such as Roman Reigns, Cody Rhodes, and Seth Rollins appear in this upcoming documentary.
Here, superstars reveal how the main event underwent significant changes after the reactions from fans. In one instance, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson noted how the fans’ concerns forced him to talk to the management. He said, “We could do that (Roman v. The Rock). But my gut says, I don’t like, even if it’s a segment of fans, I don’t like that they’re upset.”
Meanwhile, the documentary also elaborates on what led to the electrifying Roman Reigns & The Rock vs. Cody Rhodes & Seth Rollins match on Day 1 of Wrestlemania 40. Moreover, it also sheds light on how legends like John Cena and The Undertaker also became a part of the storyline.
