The Grimm Variations may have just been completed, but the anime left a taste that can’t be easily satisfied. The popular anime was based on the historic Brothers Grimm fairy tales. Wit Studio had done an amazing job of bringing the brother’s famous book to life. The anime is an amazing watch for new fans of the dark anime genre and veteran watchers. With that said, here are some of the best anime to watch after The Grimm Variations.

Despite the anime flying practically under the radar last year, Dark Gathering remains one of the most interesting dark anime of all time. Like the Grimm variations, Dark Gathering twists common lore and stories to improve an already epic story. The story follows Keitarô Gentôga, a college freshman who wants nothing to do with the supernatural after a curse affects him and his friend. However, that proves difficult for Keitaro, as he has a knack for attracting spirits. His quest for a normal life leads him to tutor Yayoi Hôzuki, a prodigy who also happens to be a medium. Yayoi drags Keitaru back into the supernatural life he had tried to leave behind.

Tokyo Ghoul

Sui Ishida’s dark fantasy story has been on the lips of every anime fan for nearly a decade. The story follows Ken Kaneki, a college student who has a brush with the supernatural after a date goes wrong. He manages to escape and has an organ transplant from a supernatural creature, turning him into a half-ghoul. Thankfully, he meets some workers at the Anteiku who teach him how to live as a half-ghoul. Kaneki struggles to coexist in both worlds, as he doesn’t truly belong in either. Like Grimm Variations, the fast-paced action in Tokyo Ghoul will leave viewers glued to their screens.

When They Cry: Higurashi

Higurashi is truly a gem in the dark anime genre, and despite its early release, the anime still retains the elements that make it a masterpiece today. The anime follows Keiichi Maebara, who just moved to the little village of Hinamizawa. He makes several friends but discovers this quiet little village isn’t exactly what it seems. Keiichi learns about the string of murders in the village and their relation to their god. He tries to gather information about the situation but his friends shut him down. The ensuing mystery and paranoia led him to discover some shocking truths about the village.

Another

The story follows Koichi Sasakibara, who transfers to a new school for a fresh start. However, he gets placed in class 3-3, the most haunted spot in the entire school. He meets Mei Misaki and immediately feels drawn to her because of her beautiful and mysterious nature, but he discovers that she is practically ignored in class. The class is then caught up in an incident that sees students and their relatives die as a result of an old curse. Koichi and Meitry try to solve and figure out the curse that has plagued the class since 1972. The series is a great watch for people looking for a gory anime with a great story.
