Anyone familiar with the series will know that were not saying anything controversial when we remark that season five was a noticeable improvement over season four.
Naturally, however, the series’ fifth season wasn’t without its ups and downs.
After the jump we’ve outlined some of the best and worst moments of True Blood season five.
The Best
- Tara Turns. Tara has been my favorite character since episode one. Her sassy mouth and big attitude make her fun to watch. It was high time that one of the original cast members was turned and too much of the show relies on Sookie’s semi-humanity for her to be made in to a creature of the night. Tara was the perfect choice to be turned. Seeing Tara’s rage unleashed as she came to terms with the loss of her humanity was well played. Tara’s transition created a really complex dynamic between her and Sookie. It’s bold moves like that which have helped the show stay relevant after five seasons.
- Sam brings the true death upon Rosalyn. Sam flies in to Rosalyn’s mouth (as a fly) shifts and causes her to explode. This was one of the coolest looking deaths I’ve seen. Period. I had to rewind it and watch it again.
- Steve Newlin comes out of the coffin and the closet. It was great to see Steve Newlin get a taste of his own medicine, so to speak. All of a sudden he became everything that he so arrogantly stood against. The only problem I had was that there was never an in-depth explanation as to why or how he joined to the ranks of the undead. Perhaps we will see a proper explanation in season six? Michael McMillian’s performance is spot on. He plays Steve like a liberated kid in a proverbial candy store. And, strangely, he’s almost kind of likable.
- Russell Meets The True Death. It was great to see Russell back. Viewers love to hate him. The writers were smart to work him back in to the season five storyline, but he was beginning to outstay his welcome. It was great to see him go out with a bang.
- Pam makes Tracy Tara’s unpaid food whore. Tracy is a bitch and a nasty person. It was pure pleasure to see her get her comeuppance. This made the list for no reason than how satisfying it was to watch. I’m curious to see where things go with Tracy and Tara’s arrangement in the next season.
The Worst
- Bill becomes a Sanguinista. The Sanguinista beliefs are in direct opposition to everything that Bill stands for. It wasn’t believable and Stephen Moyer didn’t sell the performance. Ive never seen Bill as a lost soul ambling through life and looking for answers. He’s never been susceptible to bullshit and it didn’t make sense for him to turn on a dime (even if he did offer a brief explanation in the final moments of the finale). Watching Bill digress into madness and physically abuse Jessica was really disappointing. It was sad to see a once likeable character turn in to such an asshole. I only hope his character can be salvaged in season six.
- Jessica glamours Hoyt. No matter how painful an experience might be, it is still a part of what makes us who we are. It’s implausible that anyone would want to forget their best friend and ex-girlfriend, even if they did boff a time or two. Hoyt was foolish for asking and Jessica was negligent in using her power for the sake of Hoyt’s self indulgence.
- Luna skinwalks as Sam. The entire sequence was poorly done. It looked and sounded weird. It sounded like Luna’s voice coming from Sam’s body which was creepy, as was watching Sam stroking, er…Sam’s head in Sam’s lap. The whole subplot was nothing more than filler.
- Nigel, the baby eater. It was mortifying to see the vampire pervert, Nigel, preying on children and doing it in the name of “religion.” As fans of the show, we understand the blood of babies to be irresistible to vampires but it was too much, even for a seasoned horror fan to see Nigel feed on a young child and ask for more, in the name of Lilith. Gross.
- The fire monster. The effects were horrible and the entire fire monster sub-plot was weak. Find a better way to get Terry more screen time.
