The Azrael release date for the Samara Weaving action horror thriller has been confirmed after Shudder and IFC Films acquired the North American rights.
The Azrael release date has been set for September 27, 2024, exclusively in theaters. A Shudder debut will follow later in 2024.
“I couldn’t be more thrilled to have AZRAEL released by our good friends at IFC Films / Shudder,” said director E.L Katz. “Their support of wild, uncompromising genre films is unparalleled. We are so excited to invite all horror fans along for this mysterious, gruesome, hellish, Samara Weaving ass-kicking marathon.”
What is Azrael about?
In a world in which no one speaks, a mysterious, devout community hunts down a young woman named Azrael (Weaving) who has escaped their imprisonment. Recaptured by its ruthless leaders, she is to be sacrificed to pacify an evil that resides deep within the surrounding wilderness—but Azrael will stop at nothing to ensure her own freedom and survival.
The film premiered at the 2024 SXSW Film & TV Festival. It is set to make its Canadian premiere at the 2024 Fantasia International Film Festival.
Vic Carmen Sonne (Holiday), Katariina Unt (Deliver Us), Nathan Stewart-Jarrett (Candyman), Rea Lest (November), and Johan Rosenberg join Weaving in the cast.
Azrael is produced by Dan Kagan, Dave Caplan, and Simon Barrett. The latter two had recent success producing Osgood Perkins’ Longlegs.
Samara Weaving has been steadily making a name for herself in genre film. Most notably in standout turns in Joe Lynch’s Mayhem, McG’s The Babysitter, and Radio Silence’s Ready or Not. Outside that, she’s had parts in Babylon, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Bill & Ted Face the Music, and Scream 6.
Filmmaker E.L. Katz is best known for 2013’s Cheap Thrills and for directing episodes of The Haunting of Bly Manor. He also helmed 2017’s Small Crimes and a segment for anthology horror The ABCs of Death. An adaptation of Nick Cutter’s grisly novel The Troop is on his future slate.
