Shinsuke Nakamura announced that he will corner Rei Tsuruya, who is making his UFC debut at UFC 303. WWE officials have confirmed Nakamura’s involvement to ESPN. Nakamura expressed his enthusiasm for the event in a statement to the network.
He stated, “I am excited to be a part of the massive UFC 303 event this weekend. It is an honor to be in Rei Tsuruya’s corner. MMA is still a huge passion of mine and to be a part of Rei’s UFC debut is a great moment.”
Shinsuke Nakamura to join Rei Tsuruya’s corner at UFC 303
WWE Superstar Shinsuke Nakamura will be in the corner of UFC newcomer Rei Tsuruya for his debut. Tsuruya, is a rising Japanese fighter who forged his own path. He won the season 2 of Road to the UFC, a show which grants winners UFC contracts to the upcoming fighters.
Rei Tsuruya had compiled a perfect 9-0 MMA record before joining the UFC in February. This weekend, he will face Carlos Hernandez, who holds a 2-2 record. UFC 303 will be headlined by Alex Pereira and Jiří Procházka.
Both fighters are stepping in on short notice after the event was originally scheduled to be headlined by Michael Chandler and Conor McGregor. However, it was changed due to the latter’s announcement that he had injured his pinky toe. This forced him to pull out of the event, prompting the UFC to announce the new main event headliners.
