A recent update revealed details about former WWE Champion CM Punk’s return and his plans afterwards. Punk, who suffered a tricep injury in January this year during WWE Royal Rumble, has not been completely sidelined. He has made multiple appearances on WWE shows, where he has been feuding with Drew McIntyre.
CM Punk, who underwent surgery in January, may be gearing up for a WWE comeback. On the Wrestling Observer Radio, wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer mentioned that CM Punk could return around August or September. Upon his return, Meltzer also suggested that Punk might be in line for a major title match, possibly at SummerSlam.
He stated, “Punk’s not that far from being back most likely. If he had his surgery at the end of January, you’re looking at the end of July, August, maybe September. It’s not that far away anymore. He might make SummerSlam. And if he can make SummerSlam, Punk and Drew for the title, that makes a lot of sense. Even if he can’t, you can do it a month after. Punk will be back fairly soon, it’s not as far away as sometimes you think because of that surgery.”
With Meltzer speculating about CM Punk’s potential return in the summer, it will be interesting to see if Punk makes a comeback at WWE SummerSlam.
Potential clash: CM Punk vs. Drew McIntyre for WWE world title
On the most recent WWE RAW episode, Damian Priest agreed to grant Drew McIntyre a title shot. During WWE WrestleMania 40, Priest used his Money in the Bank contract to win the WWE World Title from McIntyre. However, the latter did not receive a rematch. Instead, CM Punk’s actions led to McIntyre being placed in a number-one contender match.
Now that Drew McIntyre is finally receiving a shot at the WWE World Title, the match could be scheduled for next month. However, he has not been cleared to compete due to injury. Next month, WWE will host Clash at the Castle, a premium live event in Glasgow, Scotland, McIntyre’s homeland. WWE may plan for McIntyre to win the world title in front of his home crowd.
This could potentially set up a title defense clash against CM Punk in August at WWE SummerSlam. The promotion can also plan for this significant matchup at WWE Bash in Berlin, the following premium live event in Germany, scheduled for August 31st.
