Apple TV+ has dropped The Big Cigar trailer for the upcoming historical limited drama based on Joshuah Bearman’s 2012 Playboy magazine article.
The video highlights Black Panther Party founder Huey P. Newton’s (André Holland) unbelievable escape plan to Cuba, which involves staging a fake movie production. The miniseries is scheduled to make its debut on May 17 with the first two episodes, followed by new episodes every Friday through June 14.

What is The Big Cigar about?
“It is the incredible true story of Hollywood revolution meeting social revolution: it’s a wild caper of Black Panther founder Newton escaping from the FBI to Cuba with the assistance of famed producer Bert Schneider in an impossibly elaborate plan — involving a fake movie production — that goes wrong every way it possibly can. And somehow, it’s all true. Mostly,” reads the synopsis.
The Big Cigar is written and executive produced by Jim Hecht, with Janine Sherman serving as its showrunner. The miniseries stars André Holland, Alessandro Nivola, Tiffany Boone, P. J. Byrne, Marc Menchaca, Moses Ingram, Rebecca Dalton, Olli Haaskivi, Jordane Christie, and Glynn Turman. The creative team also includes Marvel vet Don Cheadle, who is also directing and executive producing the first two episodes. It is a production by Warner Bros. Television.
