HBO Max has dropped an official trailer for The Last Movie Stars, the forthcoming six-part documentary series about the love story of Hollywood legends Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. Directed by Ethan Hawke, the series will be available for streaming on July 21.
The video features Hawke as he enlists the help of fellow Hollywood A-listers to read the transcriptions of the lost interview tapes that Newman made when he previously planned to create a memoir. However, he later decided to not move forward with the project and burned all the precious tapes. Fortunately, these were all transcribed, with Hawke seeking to bring them to life by inviting guest stars, including George Clooney and Laura Linney, who will be reading for Newman and Woodward.

This epic six-part documentary from CNN Films and HBO Max chronicles Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward’s iconic careers and decades-long partnership. It is executive produced by Martin Scorsese.
“In the docuseries, Ethan Hawke brings life and color to this definitive history of their dedication to their art, philanthropy and each other,” reads the synopsis. “Through long lost transcriptions of interviews with Paul, Joanne and those close to them, brought to life by the voices of contemporary actors, we’re given an intimate front row seat to the lives and careers of the couple that would go on to forge an unmatched cultural legacy.
The docufilm is produced by Nook House Productions’ Emily Wachtel and Lisa Long Adler, along with Under the Influence Productions’ Adam Gibbs and Ryan Hawke. This project marks the second time Hawke will be directing a documentary, six years after 2014’s Seymour: An Introduction.

Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward’s 50-year love story began when they became colleagues in the set of 1958’s The Long, Hot Summer. Shortly after that, they both got married in Las Vegas on January 29, 1958. They were praised not only for their withstanding devotion and respect towards each other, but also for being one of the first few Hollywood couples who chose to raise their three daughters outside of California. Their marriage lasted for 50 years, up until Newman’s death at the age of 83 in 2008.
