Marvel Entertainment has announced that Hulu has given the green light to Marvel’s Runaways TV series, based on the fan-favorite comic series created by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona. Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage will executive produce the Runaways TV series, which focuses on a group of six teenagers who discover that their parents are actually a team of supervillains.
“I’m a long-time fan of Runaways and couldn’t be more excited to bring Brian and Adrian’s characters to life,” Schwartz said.
“We’ve known the Runaways‘ story would make great television,” Head of Marvel Television Jeph Loeb said. “And being lucky enough to have Josh and Stephanie — who have time and again created shows that speak so genuinely to this exact audience — write and produce the series is nothing short of remarkable.”
The original series began in 2003 and featured the characters Nico Minoru (the daughter of wizards), Karolina Dean (the daughter of alien invaders), Molly Hayes (the daughter of mutants), Chase Stein (the son of mad scientists), Alex Wilder (the son of mafia bosses), and Gertrude Yorkes (the daughter of time-traveling criminals. The series would eventually add Old Lace, a genetically engineered dinosaur from the 87th century to the group, though it remains to be seen if he will appear in the series.
Runaways was previously in-development as a feature film for Marvel Studios, featuring a script by Iron Man 3 scribe Drew Pearce, who previously teased that TV conversations for the series had taken place.
