The Girlfriend has been ordered to series at Prime Video, which House of Cards actress Robin Wright is set to lead and direct. The series will be based on Michelle Frances’ 2018 debut novel of the same name.
According to Deadline, Wright will be joined by Olivia Cooke (House of the Dragon), Laurie Davidson (Mary and George), and Waleed Zuaiter (Gangs of London). The bestselling novel the series will be based on is billed as “a gripping and chilling” psychological thriller that will revolve around an unforgivable lie that will change the lives of those involved.
What is The Girlfriend about?
The series centers on Laura (Wright), a woman who has it all: a successful career, a happy marriage with Howard (Zuaiter), and a kind and talented son, Daniel (Davidson). Laura’s life will change when Daniel brings his girlfriend Cherry (Cooke) home. A beautiful and smart young woman, Cherry never had the opportunity or privileges her boyfriend had. And she wants Laura’s seemingly perfect life.
“Cherry comes to the family wide-eyed and wants to be welcomed with open arms, but Laura suspects she’s not all that she seems,” the book’s synopsis reads. “When tragedy strikes, an [unforgivable] lie is told. It is an act of desperation, but the fall-out will change their lives forever.”
The series is produced by Imaginarium Productions and Amazon MGM Studios. The book’s author will also serve as the executive producer, along with Jonathan Cavendish, Wright, Will Tennant, Phil Robertson, John Zois, Dave Clarke, and Gabbie Asher.
“I’m thrilled to be directing and acting in this wildly delicious psychological thriller filled with plot twists and surprising character turns, and to be working with such talented actors, Olivia and Laurie, and an overall amazing cast & crew,” Wright said in a statement (via Deadline).
