Beef creator Lee Sung Jin is reportedly hoping to cast Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway, Charles Melton, and Cailee Spaeny in the second season of the Netflix and A24 series.
Per Deadline, Gyllenhaal, Hathaway, Melton, and Spaeny are all being eyed to play feuding couples in the second season of Netflix’s Beef. While no deal is yet in place, Melton and Spaeny would play one couple while Gyllenhaal and Hathaway would play the other.
Deadline also reports that “a limited season’s worth of scripts [for Beef Season 2] were just turned in or are about to be, and that Netflix and A24 are ready to get the second season into production by late summer or fall.”
Gyllenhaal and Hathaway both starred in 2005’s Brokeback Mountain alongside Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams. They also played lead roles together in 2010’s Love & Other Drugs, which was directed by Edward Zwick.
Melton, meanwhile, is known for playing Reggie Mantle in Riverdale and for starring in 2023’s May December. Spaeny played Priscilla Presley in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla and will soon be seen in Alex Garland’s Civil War and Fede Álvarez’s Alien: Romulus.
What is Netflix and A24’s Beef about?
The first season of Beef premiered on Netflix in April 2023. It stars Steven Yeun, Ali Wong, Joseph Lee, Young Mazino, David Choe, and Patti Yasutake.
“It follows the aftermath of a road rage incident between two strangers,” the synopsis for Beef Season 1 reads. “Danny Cho, a failing contractor with a chip on his shoulder, goes head-to-head with Amy Lau, a self-made entrepreneur with a picturesque life. The increasing stakes of their feud unravel their lives and relationships in this darkly comedic and deeply moving series.”
Lee Sung Jin has spoken about his desire to turn Beef, which debuted as a ten-episode limited series, into an anthology show before. He told Deadline in January 2024, “We always pitched the season to buyers as an anthology series. There was always going to be new characters. Whether it stays limited or turns as an anthology or we continue existing, that’s really up to Netflix. But whatever they decide, I’m definitely ready.”
