Game of Thrones Final 2 Seasons Were Originally Going to Be 3 Movies

The final two seasons of HBO’s Game of Thrones were originally going to be three separate movies.

According to a recent article published by the Wall Street Journal, per Variety, Game of Thrones showrunner David Benioff and D.B. Weiss originally wanted seasons seven and eight of the fan-favorite series to be three theatrically-released movies.

Network executives, however, reportedly weren’t interested in bringing Game of Thrones to theaters, as Benioff says he was “reminded that HBO stands for ‘Home Box Office’ and not ‘Away Box Office.’”

The first episode of Game of Thrones aired on HBO in the United States in April 2011. It ran for eight seasons total, the final two being the most controversial, as many fans critized the pacing and various plot developments featured near the end of the series.

Several Game of Thrones spin-offs are in the works

At this time, HBO still doesn’t seem to have any plans to make a Game of Thrones movie; however, there are several spin-off series that are currently in the various stages of development.

The first spin-off show, House of the Dragon, premiered on HBO Max in August 2022. A second season is currently planned for the summer of 2024.

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also recently announced that another spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, is looking to release in “late 2025.”

“A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros . . . a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg,” the logline for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight reads. “Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”
